Logline

When a cascade of orbital debris shatters the satellites and America goes dark, one family fights to turn a Tennessee mountain into a refuge — and to decide how much mercy a place can extend before mercy gets it killed.

Series description

In 2030, the Kessler Cascade ends the connected world in an afternoon. Jason and Marie Wilder had prepared for hard times — not for being separated across a country coming apart at the seams. Across three books, The Refuge follows the Wilders and the people who gather to them as they hold a mountain sanctuary through a second American civil war: the walls they build, the neighbors they take in, and the harder question underneath all of it — whether faith and mercy can survive when survival itself is on the line.

It is a survival story with a conscience: grounded in the practical texture of grid-down life, but centered on family, community, and the cost of keeping your humanity when the lights go out.

About the author

Michael Bath is the author of The Refuge series. He writes character-driven survival fiction that takes both catastrophe and conviction seriously — stories where preparation matters, but where the deciding factor is always the people. Books One and Two are available now; Book Three continues the Wilder family’s stand.

Themes & talking points

  • Faith and mercy under pressure — when generosity becomes dangerous, what does conviction require?
  • Family separated by catastrophe, and the long road back together.
  • Realistic preparedness without the bunker fantasy — ordinary people, ordinary resources.
  • Community versus the lone-wolf myth: why survival is a team sport.
  • The real science behind the premise (see the Kessler Cascade piece).

Interview questions (ready to ask)

  • The Refuge opens with the satellites falling. How much of that is real science, and how much is story?
  • Most survival fiction is about hardware. Yours is about mercy. Why put faith at the center?
  • The Wilders prepared — and it still wasn’t enough. What were you trying to say about preparation?
  • Book Two is called Siege of Mercy. What’s under siege, exactly?
  • What do you hope a reader does differently after closing the book?
